Thankful

May 30th, 2011

I know in my heart that I am thankful for many many blessings in my life.  I get so overwhelmed with living, trying to decide what I really want to do when I grow up, and all the things that I take for granted – I don’t really think about what I’m grateful for.  This will be an ongoing list – I’m impressed when I see it on other blogs.  (When I grow up, I want to be as kind and sincere as this woman.)

#1.  I am thankful for Jesus Christ, His message of truth and grace, and His redemption.

#2.  I am thankful to be a solo mama to an incredible little tadpolette that I love with all my heart.

#3.  I am thankful for the home I was raised in, and the dad that proudly served in Korea, and proudly teared up at anything patriotic.

#4.  For wonderful friends, the ones that share my faith, and the ones that share my life that I hope someday share my faith.

#5.  To live in the most incredible nation on earth

#6.  To live in my dream town less than 2 blocks from the beach

#7 To honor those men on this memorial day that have died so that we live in the relative freedom we do

#8 The finger paint on the blanket my daughter and her friend were sitting on in the sunshine today

#9 only 1 real school day left, a beach day, a party day, and then almost three weeks of no plans except going to the beach at least once a day.

#10 Treasures from the beach

Homeschooling

March 16th, 2011

Have I mentioned that I home school my daughter?  I love it!  When I was younger and dreamed of a large family, my thoughts of homeschooling were different than what I do now, but I’m happy with it.

We “home school with a twist”  that means, my daughter goes to a class setting at a school 2 days a week and we home school together 3 days a week.

The pluses are there is an established home schooling mom that teaches my daughter (and me) about how to home school most effectively, someone else plans the lessons, I just buy the curriculum and off we go.

I love that she has like minded Christian friends at school in light of not having siblings at home.  I’m not big fan of the “socialization” argument, since basically that means someone expects her to be part of the herd.  But I am a fan of having to share attention and a little independence from mom.  (I’m also very thankful for a little bit of time that is totally devoted to my business needs.  I can squeeze a lot of work into those school hours.)

Do you have anything like this in your area?  If you’re looking in Orange County for options with your home school experience, I definitely recommend the Vine Prep Academy.

Saying good bye to clients

February 18th, 2011

I’m like most other virtual assistants these days, we will put up with a lot sometimes.  I know I’m good at what I do, I learn quickly, I provide excellent service, and because I’ve worked in so many industries, it’s hard to throw me into something I haven’t at least worked on the outskirts of.  So it was interesting with a client that I had previously worked for one of his competitors in a very niche market.

So right off the bat, I knew it was somewhat of a flaky industry, but one that does serve a viable and useful purpose.  We agreed to terms, and everything was fine until he decided he wanted to change my terms of service.  I won’t bore with the details, but I really did try to accommodate him.  We parted ways, and then he approached me later – anyway we went back and forth and he canceled the payment he said he had sent, and wanted a different plan.  The thing is you can’t make money if you work for free or nearly free.  I would actually love an assistant to help me personally, if I didn’t have to pay him or her.  As far as I know, outside of my own mother helping me for free – no one else is willing to.  Most certainly I am not willing to work for free, or where keeping track of something would take more time than the actual work.

So over time, I think one of the hardest things I’ve had to learn about my business is that it’s ok to say “no” to some business.  The hard part is doing it gracefully and professionally.  It’s ok to be clear that you don’t want to do business on any level, but not ok to say “lose my email”.

I handled it professionally and firmly, while in my head screaming “NEXT!!”

New Years con’t

January 16th, 2011

I usually am saying good riddance to the year behind me.  There’s a lot of fun a long the way, but the last several years have certainly contained their share of “one step in front of the other, one day at a time” moments.

So, this year is no different, I had a major work shift that was not my decision, we seriously downsized and moved, I am homeschooling, I am working on rebuilding my client base, and this year I’m serious about the weight loss challenge.  Even though there’s a lot going on, things are more settled than they have been so I feel like I can spend some time on me in a good way, not necessarily self focused or self escaping.

Right now, I’m in a search for the “perfect” and I do mean perfect project management/calendar system.  As a virtual assistant to more than one client (including the non-profits that are in effect barter), home school, personal business marketing, networking, client calendars, and life in general – there has got to be a better way of tracking than what I’ve come across…so that’s my first quest.
